Crew socks are a part of every wardrobe, so you’re probably wondering whether crew socks are still in style or whether it’s time to replace them. The fact is, socks are the most underrated accessory. Because a smart choice of a good quality pair of socks can make a big difference to our appearance. Find out whether crew socks can do the same.
Crew socks are also in style this year, and the truth is that they have never really gone out of fashion. Crew socks were initially worn mainly for sporting activities – fitness, running, basketball, etc. Now, however, crew socks are used as an accessory with sneakers.
In the rest of this post, I’ll show you why crew socks are still in style and how they can best be paired with sneakers. We will also touch on whether it is better to wear crew or ankle socks and whether crew socks are the same as dress socks.
Are Crew socks in Style?
Crew socks are still in style, in my opinion, even more. Now you can also mix and match them into your outfit, unlike in the past when people only wore them for sport. There are dedicated socks on the market for wearing with sneakers, which can be in neutral colors (white, black, grey, etc.) or have patterns and stripes.
Most of the pairs of socks in my wardrobe are black, white, or grey because they are neutral colors. No matter what shoes and trousers I wear, I always have 3 colors of socks to choose from, because one of those 3 colors definitely goes perfectly with my style. If you want more colorful socks, I suggest you go for more neutral colors to mix and match your socks with all colors and styles of outfits. The picture below shows the neutral colors.

Crew socks, in addition to being worn for sport, are best suited to a more sporty look, especially when wearing sneakers. Here are some rules to follow when wearing crew socks with sneakers:
- Don’t pull them up all the way and leave them that way (that would look like you are wearing compression socks). Instead, pull them up and push them down just before they start to wrinkle (see the video below).
- It is not advisable to wear different brands of shoes and socks (e.g., Adidas shoes and Nike socks). Wearing different brands of shoes and socks can look strange, so ‘train’ yourself to wear the same brands of shoes and socks even when the sock logo is not visible (e.g., when wearing long trousers).
- Be careful of the size of the logo, as too big a logo looks too flashy and can spoil your look.
- You can wear socks without the logo, so you don’t have to worry about whether you are wearing the right combination.
- Pay attention to the quality of the crew socks, as better quality socks look better and stay on the leg for the whole time.
- If you wear socks with stripes, they should be the same color as the shoe and not too noticeable (e.g., white socks with red stripes).
Should I Wear crew socks or ankle socks?
Whether to wear crew or ankle socks depends on whether you want your socks to be visible and for which occasion you wear them. Wear crew socks if you want to use the socks as an accessory to your outfit. If you want your socks to be discreet, then wear ankle socks.
Whether we wear long or short socks, we can choose crew or ankle socks. You can wear crew socks when wearing sneakers because they will complete your look. If you want your legs and sneakers to be in focus, then wear ankle socks.
The opposite is true when we wear long trousers. When we wear suits, we want to wear socks as long as possible so that the skin is not exposed when we sit down. That is why we wear crew socks, even with jeans, because we do not want to show skin and protect the legs in cold weather. In contrast, ankle socks go well with Capri trousers, which end just above the ankle, and are not as long as trousers of classic length.
Are crew socks dress socks?
Crew socks and dress socks are not the same things. Dress socks are longer and usually reach the knees, so the calves serve as an anchor to prevent the sock from falling down. Crew socks, on the other hand, are slightly shorter and only reach the beginning of the calves.
Crew socks are not the best for wearing with a suit, as the primary purpose of dress socks is to keep the skin on the leg from showing when you sit down.
